Prudential RideLondon 100 Cycle Ride - 4 August 2019

As a Napoleonic re-enactor of many years with 1/95th(Rifle) Regiment of Foot marching for Wellington in Flanders, Portugal, Spain, France & the USA and as a keen road cyclist, the challenge of the Prudential RideLondon 100 on 4th August, 2019, coupled with the opportunity to raise money for Help for Heroes seemed the ideal thing for me to do.

Celebrating the legacy for cycling created by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the ride starts from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, then follows a 100-mile route through the capital, into Surrey’s leg-testing climbs and finishes on The Mall in central London.

Re-enactors are especially drawn to H4H from the very nature of our hobby and that many are ex-service men and women. I know that any money you most generously donate will be so beneficial to those unsung heroes that protect our country and way of life.

It is important that you know that I am paying my own costs in taking part in this ride so all money raised by me goes to Help for Heroes.

Training is going well; currently all indoors with a bike connected to my Tacx Neo turbo in the torture space, otherwise known as my garage.

So far this year, 360 miles with 64,311 ft of ascent; twice Everest! Focus on climbing now switched to distance so should be ready to resume strong training outdoors by end of March.

Aiming to ride the Bostin' Diablo 100 in the Peak District on 5 May when rest of 1/95th is entertaining at West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village. If I can do that then London will be a breeze!

Training continues and finally got tested outside twice last week. I completed a tough, 43miles route on Sunday in the Chilterns in 2hrs 59mins, 3054ft of ascent. This was 10 mins faster overall than the last time that I rode this route, with Steve Lee, in September 2018, plus PRs on all the major climbs, some maxing between 16-22%.

Totals thus far this year; 608miles with 81,000ft of ascent.

So, I am doing my best to make RideLondon a success and have the confidence from £422 raised thus far for Help for Heroes. Please keep the donations coming in.

Still training hard; totals thus far this year now 823 miles with 93,123ft of ascent.
Completed Hemel Hillbusters 100km sportive last Sunday in 4hrs.
Next Sunday I attempt the Boston" Diablo 100miles sportive in the Derbys/Staffs Peak District. It's going to be a long day!

Training continues; totals thus far this year now 1076 miles with 114,491ft of ascent.
Completed Bustin' Diablo 103mile sportive in Derbys/Staffs Peak District, included 9360ft of ascent, in 8hrs 27min. Also, St Albans Charity Cycle Ride 40 miler.
This month I am booked to do 60mile ride that includes many of the classic, Flanders cobbled climbs around Oudenaarde and district.

Last ride in July yesterday; totals this year move to 1477 miles with 137, 943ft of ascent; including recent 63miles in Flanders and 86miles Redbourn Road Riders sportive.
That’s it, training complete and ready for Sunday’s Prudential Ride London 100.
Your donations leading up to the day and afterwards will be greatly appreciated for Help for Heroes.

Well, ride accomplished and what a great event is was too. Perfect weather and all the training paid dividends. Finished in 6hrs 2 mins riding time; includes about 25mins at 2mph when we were held up at Ripley, (around 42miles), due to a couple of bad accidents. Help for Heroes is delighted, as I am, with the money raised (£640), but still a couple of weeks left for more donations!
