Landguard Fort Despatch - April 2007

Post by Official Post »

The first Training Weekend for the 95th Rifles Living History.

Despite 7 Riflemen and 3 camp followers succumbing to sickness and crippled vehicles, there was a good turn out by the Members representing our regiments:
1st Battalion 95th (Rifle) Regiment of Foot (1/95), 2nd Battalion 44th East Essex Regiment of Foot (2/44)
[and the Drummer Boy from the 62eme Regiment d'Infanterie de Ligne!]

The authorities of this magnificent Georgian/Victorian fort (http://www.landguard.com) once again gave us permission to use the barracks throughout the weekend.

To open the Fort's season, they had set up a "Focus on Youth" theme and Felixstowe TV sent reporter, Alex Davis, to cover the event and interview the various groups, including our Society.

Our officers and NCOs put us through our paces on both days and we even had time to rope in the young Air & Army Cadets to try out Napoleonic drill. They did extremely well considering that they had to ignore the urge to swing their arms and stamp their feet as they would in their modern drill.

Well done to new recruit Stuart, our first six-footer Rifleman, in your first outing. The average height for Riflemen in the 1/95th was 5ft 7in but there were several who were well over that height, so Stuart will be a good representative for that group.

A positive start to the season at a wonderful venue.

The 95th Rifles Living History Society will march again at Cressing Temple Barns on 21/22 April 2007.
